Sea Turtle Pendants

Meet Shirley’s Newest Creations –
Sea Turtle Pendants!

Artist Shirley Matteson is always imagining and creating new things. After the success of her gold inlaid butterfly necklaces, she’s come up with something new and just as exciting. Take a look at her gorgeous new sea turtle pendants!!

Renowned fine jewelry artist Shirley Matteson has unveiled a stunning new creation: a sea turtle pendant crafted using the intricate cloisonné technique. This ancient art form involves painstakingly shaping thin metal wires into delicate compartments, or cloisons, which are then filled with vibrant, glossy enamel. The sea turtle, a timeless symbol of resilience and harmony with nature, comes to life in this pendant through a symphony of ocean-inspired hues (or any color you choose!). Rich blues and teals swirl across the turtle’s shell, while shimmering silver accents trace its outline, capturing both the grace of marine life and the luminous quality of sunlight dancing on water.

A New Texture?

The champlevé technique, a revered art in fine jewelry, involves carving or etching depressions directly into the surface of a metal piece. Unlike cloisonné, where fine wires create separate compartments, champlevé allows for a unique depth and texture to each piece. Once the enamel is layered into the cloisonne sections in the center, it is fired to achieve a glossy, gem-like finish, and then polished to a smooth, lustrous surface. The result is a breathtaking combination of silver and enamel that creates a striking interplay of color and light, allowing each piece to catch the eye in remarkable ways.

For a fine jewelry artist, champlevé is both an artistic and technical endeavor, offering the freedom to create intricate designs with a sense of three-dimensional relief. The technique is often used to craft pieces inspired by nature or geometric motifs, where fluidity and movement are paramount. Each piece showcases a blend of refined metals, such as gold or silver, paired with enamel that ranges from deep, jewel-toned shades to soft pastels, allowing for a wide array of stylistic expressions. For those who wear these creations, champlevé jewelry is more than an accessory; it’s a statement of elegance and craftsmanship, a testament to an artist’s skill and dedication in transforming metal and enamel into a timeless work of art.
